You can pray

I find myself constantly asking questions about my own vocation. Who am I? Where am I heading? How can I fulfill God`s call on my life? How can I live my testimony? And then the dreadful question: Am I good enough?

One morning while praying and feeling unfit for the task of being a witness for Jesus Christ, the word failure came to mind as well. What can I do to be part of the bigger picture of the enhancement of the kingdom of God, was another question.

With these questions in mind, I turned my attention to Acts 10 because I am reading and praying through the book of Acts. What can I do, Lord? I feel so totally ineffective and incompetent.

At that moment, I read the words of the angel in a vision of Cornelius, but clearly God is speaking to him: “Your prayers and your alms have ascended as a memorial before God. My prayers ascend as a memorial to God, really? Yes, God`s word says that.

This was the answer I longed for: You can pray and your prayers will ascend as a memorial before God. I can pray, yes, I can pray and God will hear. My prayers matter to God.

At that moment, I was reminded of Revelations 5:8:  And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each holding a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. My prayers ascend as a memorial before God, but my prayers are also caught up in golden bowls to be made a sacrifice to God with the incense on the altar.

This realization encouraged me to pray with passion. This was when I called out: Lord, teach me to pray! Yes, I can pray and wait on the Lord and He will inspire me and open doors according to His will. For now, I will pray. This leads me to the question: Whose am I? I am yours Lord, here I am on my knees.

You can pray! Prayers of the believers matters intensely to the Lord.

Scripture for further reflection

Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. (James 5:16, ESV)

7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. (James 4:7-8, ESV)
